Breakfast in downtown Anchorage, Alaska

So breakfast can actually be a hard thing to seemingly find in downtown Anchorage, but after scouring the downtown area and trying some places out, I've come up with a small alternative list.

1.  Snow City Cafe - 1034 W. 4th Ave  Snow City Cafe Website
Snow City can make a great breakfast.  They have two soups that change out and are available for early lunch, so if you are having a late breakfast it gives you some more options.  They also have a specials menu that you can preview on their site.  (For lunch the salad special is usually yummy.)  The service is generally slow but usually nice.  The drip coffee is actually drinkable here.  The food is tasty and well prepared.  The portions are big.

This place gets PACKED!!!!!  You have the five million tourists during the hot season and then all of the local business people that come in for breakfast/lunch/coffee year round.  They have somewhat recently added the ability to put in a reservation on their website.  I wholly recommend you take advantage of it.

Even with the little tourist maps you see people with, tourists generally end up with that wide eyed look about a block away from this place walking in circles.  This cafe is at 4th and L.  If you walk down 4th, just keep walking towards the end and it is on the corner.  There are a handful of doors but only the ones on the corner open up.  Parking a car in this area is next to impossible.

2.  Muffin Man 817 W. 6th Ave  (No website that I know of)
The muffin man is located close to the Marriott and the main bus station.  The menu is generally small but good.  Better selection could be made for lunch.  Breakfast sandwiches are excellent.  Getting your food can be a bit time consuming, so don't go in starving.  Coffee is good and drinkable and there is a fair amount of open seating inside.  You might have some luck parking near this place on one of the lesser used side street.  Do be aware that if you go in for lunch that you could be in for a long line just to order.  You can check the menu online at one of the restaurant menu sites and call ahead to place your order.  This is not one of my top picks, but it is worthwhile.

3.  Slippery Salmon - 115 E 3rd Ave  Slippery Salmon Website
This is a much newer place.  It's attached on one side to the Ramada Downtown and it's a bit out of the way for most locals, so I wouldn't expect to see heavy local traffic hear on a week day.  It is very close to where the weekend market is, so it's a great spot to check out if you are in town visiting.  The food is excellent and has outdoor availability during the summer time.  I recommend that you check out the menu online if you are contemplating.  I personally feel that it's not the most kid friendly for those that are not adventurous, but that could also be that if you don't have a plain hot dog on the menu my niece would have a fit.  They do have a polish dog I believe  The variety is nice and everything is natural and homemade.   I personally had not used the restroom, but my husband told me that it looked like the renovation money ran out and they hadn't gotten there yet.  I hope they get to it soon!!  Strange how important a restroom can be to an eating establishment.  It's in an odd location for parking.  If you have a car you are going to want to use 3rd going west towards A.  The building in on the right.  There is on the street parking and you are sharing with the condos and hotel.  This is a very worthwhile place to go, and I wish it was closer.  I haven't been able to try much of the menu yet, but hopefully this place sticks around for a while.  I have a feeling this place could be a fav.  You can expect to spend around $10 - $15/pp for an entree.

4.  K Street Convenience Store - 434 K Street (No website that I know of)
This little convenience store is just that.  It's packed full of those essentials that you forgot or found out you needed.  The prices for those things are a bit pricey, but it's one of the only places you can get a lot of that stuff so close.  They also have great lunch and breakfast options. They have premade breakfast burritos in the fridge which they would be happy to warm up for you.  They have a lot of stuff that rotates around so I would hate to say that have something new, when they are just trying it out.  This place is mostly excellent for their lunch burritos, cause they are made with your choice of ingredients and then toasted.  This is on the list because it a great grab and go for a moderate price.  They also have bike rentals so you can grab your lunch and go for a ride along downtown or the close by coastal trail.  This place is also right across from the Captain Cook hotel.

5.  Horizons Cafe - 701 West 8th Avenue Horizons Cafe Website
This cafe is really a cafeteria in the ConocoPhilips building.  It's one of the tallest buildings downtown.  They are open for breakfast until 10 and then reopen at 11 (until 2) for lunch.  They have some solid options for breakfast and it's fairly harmless on the pocketbook.  They have a small menu, and then they have some healthy options. They will customize almost everything for you.  They have omelets (I ask for them to make it a scramble) which you can ask for egg whites or vary the fillings to what you want.  The also have breakfast sandwiches which are pretty fast and tasty.  This is also a very good place for lunch.  They have a sandwich bar and a grill area and they just improved the salad bar.
Do not worry about coming to this place.  They get a LOT of people from all the other buildings surrounding the place.  They also have a fairly good sized seating area in the atrium of the building.  There is a coffee shop in the atrium that makes good coffee, but the prices are a bit high compared to very close by shops.  This is my almost daily (during the week) place to go.

6. The Marriott - 820 W. 7th Ave Marriott Cafe
This place was a real surprise for me.  My girlfriend and I both work close to the hotel and decided to go here for a breakfast.  We went on a Saturday, and it looked like a bunch of cruise line buses had just left.  We went to the cafe and were immediately greeted and given a table.  This place surprised the heck out of us.  Totally awesome staff.  Excellent buffet or you can order from the menu.  Even the buffet has options as to full, half, continental...  It truly felt as though we were in a finer dining establishment than a cafe in a hotel.  I wholly recommend this place.  The one note I would make is for the eggs.  The ones on the buffet aren't the most appetizing, but you can order an omelet which will be made and brought to your table (included), which is well worth it.  I even asked for a small omelet, and was served a cute tiny omelet, just how I asked.
